Councilor Alexander Cruz Sta. Maria or "Doc Alex" to his friends and constituents was born on July 31, 1971. Doc Alex is an Ophthalmologist by profession and a Diplomate of the Philippine Board of Ophthalmology. He is an Associate Professor II at the Our Lady of Fatima University College of Medicine.
Doc Alex is also an Active Consultant of Fatima Medical Center, Chairman, Nazarenus Cataract Center, and Senior Consultant of Borough Medical Clinic Institute.
Councilor Sta. Maria took his secondary, tertiary and medical studies at the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas in Manila and obtained a Master's Degree in Local Governance from the University of Makati in 2012.
In the may 13, 2013 midterm and local elections, Councilor Sta. Maria was re-elected for his second term in office and landed at the top spot having garnered the most number of votes in the City's second district. This can be attributed to his track record, legislative performance and barangay projects, thus being to his adage "Serbisyong Maaasahan".
Among the projects and programs that were implemented during his first term are:
- Year-round anti-dengue campaign;
- Free cataract surgery, circumcision, medical/dental service, and TB awareness programs;
- Solar light bulb project (adopted by some AFP units in Mindanao)
- Basketball clinic in cooperation with PBA and AKTV
- Free breast examination & cervical screening in partnership with the Soroptimist Int'l;
- Libreng Tsinelas in Partnership with PBA and AKTV
- Regular feeding programs;
- Surgical missions in partnership with West Pennsylvania (USA) doctors; and
- Professional gamefowl (sabong) seminar in partnership with Sabong TV.
In the City Council, Councilor Sta. Maria chairs the Committee on Health, Public Welfare and Environmental Protection, and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Transportation, Communication and Telecommunications Service.
He is also the Vice-Chair of the Local Tobacco Council and Member of the Local Health Board, Local Aids Council, Committee on Peace and Order, Public Service and Fire Protection, Committee on Laws, Rules and barangay Affairs, Committee on Education, Arts and Culture and the Batang Ina Task Force.
Known as the "Eye of the Tiger" of Mandaluyong City, Councilor Sta. Maria plans to continue his unique brand of public service to his constituents - providing quality, efficient and effective public service to each and every Mandale?o.
He is happily married to Dra. Christine Mojares- Sta. Maria, an anesthesiologist, and is blessed with three children namely, Beatrice, Hanna and Kelsie.
Councilor Sta. Maria hails from Barangay Hulo, son of the late Engineer Hipolito B. Sta. Maria - a former Barangay Councilman of Hulo and UST professor, and DR. Antonina C. Sta. Maria - a PUP professor.
